It’s fine!! I like recommending books. I really only read for class during the school year because I’m so busy, but thankfully the whole English major/creative writing student thing means I get to check out a lot of fiction.
Hotel World by Ali Smith is probably my favorite and most admired book that I’ve read in the past year. It messes with form a little so in theory it’s not a very traditional novel (there’s an entire chapter with no punctuation marks), but I found it super easy to read anyway, which is a feat on Ali Smith’s part.
CivilWarLand in Bad Decline and Tenth of December by George Saunders. These are both collections of short stories, which Saunders is known for. The NY Times book review called Tenth of December the best book of the year on like January 6th. I have yet to read that one, but I have read CivilWarLand, and it’s brilliant. Saunders is also just a cool guy and I recommend reading interviews with him, since he’s recently been shot into fame. We got to phone conference with him for my fiction seminar this semester and he was delightful.
Olive Kitteridgeby Elizabeth Stroud.Technically this is a novelization of short stories with a common set of characters, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s a great read either way.
Tabloid Dreamsby Robert Olen Butler. Straight up short stories with a hint of science fiction/non-realism. This guy won a Pulitzer, though not for this collection. He’s a genius.
Memento Mori by Muriel Spark. This one is a novel, and a fairly straightforward one re: form, but it’s well done and clever, and a book that taught me a lot about style.
Much Ado About Nothing. If you haven’t read it already, and if you have, read it again. Mostly because the film is coming out soon, but also because it’s hilarious and heartwarming and just, one of the best comedies ever written. Honestly.
Also, I went to a professor with this same question a couple of weeks ago, and he recommended looking up past winners and nominees for the Book Critics Circle Award, the Booker prize, and a couple of other honors I can’t remember. I have them written down somewhere, I’ll let you know if I find them.
PS: I’m going to publish this, in case anyone else is interested.

I believe a website called the-pirate-bay, and I got a key generator? I think that’s what it’s called. One of those majiggers that gives you a product code. But it was something like three years ago that I got it, so I’m fuzzy on the details. I have an actual legal copy that my dad got on a grant for work, but it’s for Windows only and I’m a Mac girl (sigh).
